Living Waters for the World
First Presbyterian Church is embarking on a significant new mission initiative, Living Waters for the World, under the aegis of the Synod of Living Waters. The mission of LWW is to provide clean and healthy water to areas that suffer a lack of that vital resource, and its goal is to establish relationships with more of God’s children. This work is being carried out in Eastern Kentucky, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Africa. The training segment of LWW is called Clean Water University, the intense four-day session of classes attendedby six members of our church: CWU 101, field survey and relationship building, water testing and team leadership (Norris MacKinnon); CWU 102, water use and spiritual education (Helen Martin, Ralph Thompson); CWU 103, installation and operation of the water purification system (Paul Adams, Don Dickson, Ron Martin).
We have committed ourselves to working with a Presbyterian congregation in Kimbila, Yucatan, Mexico, to install a water purification system. This will involve four trips to the site, first for survey and partnership development, second for training and installation, and then one-year and two-year follow-up visits. Simply to get this installation in place we need about $20,000, and our aim is to do the job early this summer.
The community in Mexico has already begun preparing for this program. They have begun construction on a building for the water treament equipment. They are eager to see their community improve through the vital resource of clean water. Call the church office to see how YOU can support this amazing program! A child dies EVERY EIGHT SECONDS from preventable water-borne illnesses. In at least one community, we can help--NOW!
